Senter Sweeps at Big Chill.

A series’ record 132 Lucas Oil American Small Car Series race teams checked into Cowtown Speedway confines for the 5th Annual Big Chill.

The 2012 season opener held much contrast to those in attendance. Friday’s frigid opening night of the two day event was but a preview to the Arctic blast that would meet patrons for a Saturday finale that saw daytime high temperature’s not escape the 30’s before devolving into painful nighttime wind chill values in the mid-teens.

But that was everywhere outside of the highbanked 1/4 mile racing surface, where nearly every painful movement of frozen air was met with a chess match of high speed and daring maneuvre. Such high quality racing has fast become signature for Cowtown Speedway.

A trio of preliminary night winners had opportunity for 5th Annual Big Chill sweeps, and as the adage goes, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.

In headlining Lucas Oil ASCS2 Outlaw competition, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Scott Sawyer paced the field from the pole position for the 2nd night in a row, as well as leading the first of 20 main event laps before a red flag for Tennessee native Howard Moore’s turn 4 tumble stopped event progress entirely.

Sawyer led Missouri’s former ASCS2 and POWRi Outlaw Champion Andrew Felker with Osceola, Arkansas’ preliminary night winner Travis Senter up from his outside 2nd row starting spot. Senter would rocket into first challenger status immediately upon restart and offer duel to Sawyer by the 5th circuit, while an intense battle for 3rd developed between Felker and Pryor, Oklahoma’s “Legendary Blue Wazoo” Frank Flud.

Senter’s assault grew more progressive as the race steadily neared the halfway point, with Senter slipping by Sawyer as the duo drag raced out of turn 4 to take the halfway flag. Sawyer stayed within range until Senter reached lapped traffic on lap 13, which the crafty veteran then picked apart with clinical precision.

With no late race stoppages, Senter crossed the final stripe with nearly a half lap advantage en route to his 5th Annual Big Chill sweep of Lucas Oil ASCS2 Outlaw competition aboard the Wren Motorsports and Accurate Machine Works sponsored no. 4w.

A Lucas Oil American Small Car Series record 125 competitors checked into Cowtown Speedway confines for the 2012 Lucas Oil ASCS2 season opener at Cowtown Speedway’s 5th Annual Big Chill. And with area temperatures in the mid 40’s at racetime and flirting with mid 20’s by its’ end – the event certainly lived up to its’ billing.

Three winners from three seperate states raced to preliminary night victories at the 5th Annual Big Chill, with the top 4 from each division locked into the top 6 redraw for the headlining Lucas Oil American Small Car Series main events.

Friday night’s 20 lap Lucas Oil ASCS2 Outlaw main event would be led to green by inaugural 2008 Big Chill winner and Tulsa native Scott Sawyer. Sawyer’s early lead came to a quick end courtesy Osceola, Arkansas’ accomplished mini sprint veteran Travis Senter.

By the midway point of the event Senter’s torrential pace had earned him a strong advantage over Carl’s Junction, Missouri’s 2009 ASCS2 and 2011 POWRi champion Andrew Felker with Sawyer, Steven Shebester, and reigning back to back ASCS2 Outlaw Champion Blake Hahn in tow.

Only a lap 14 caution for a stalled Dalton Wiseley in turn 4 could slow down Senter, as he torched the field in the Wren Motorsports and Accurate Machine Works no. 4w entry. Felker matched Senter’s pace for a time following the lap 14 restart, but ultimately settled for the runner up spot while Sawyer accepted show position honors.

The Big Change

There are few things that stand the test of time. I’ve been racing micro sprints now for 15 years now and when I first started I bought a car from Stallard Chassis. In 1999 I purchased my first 600 chassis from Stallard and every year since then I’ve bought at least one new car (sometimes two) for myself. In those years I’ve assembled or been influential in selling many cars. My friendship with Mark Stallard started the day I met him in 1998, and in 1999 I lived with him for 2 months during the summer to race and learn. Together we’ve won many races and championships.

However there comes a time to make a change and try new endeavors. So for the next racing season I will be swapping chassis builders and join PMP Racing. Utilizing Stan Yockeys knowledge and enthusiasm about this deal will make the transition easy. I’ve driven a PMP before in 2010 in Deming Washington (for Larry Jenne), so I have some understanding of what to expect. I’ve also assembled a PMP for a customer in 2008, so I’m no stranger to what lies ahead. The biggest hurdle at this point is time, there is not much time left until the 2012 season begins and I assume I’ll be non-stop in the month of February.

Won Some Lost Some

Won some lost some, but been quick in nearly every event. That has pretty much summed up my racing summer. After a tenacious start to the 2011 racing season, I had some minor bumps in the road at like leading the $2,000 to win Clarksville, TN race only to have it go up in smoke with a busted oil pan. Then after winning a pair of USCS Speedweek events, I traveled north to run some POWRi shows, which we had good runs at but fell just short of victory. Then next big race on the calendar was the $10,000 to Win race in Marion, IL.
